Giant Christmas Stocking

* Links to video tutorials for this pattern an be found at the bottom of this post.

My husband and his siblings all have giant stockings that were made by his aunt when they were kids.  When we announced our first pregnancy, we decided to tell his mom by giving her giant stockings modeled after the ones her kids have. I made one for my niece and one for my nephew. Then I made a mini-stocking to represent the baby I had on the way.

We wanted the stockings to be as similar to the originals as possible, but those had been knit.  I don’t knit, I crochet.  Since we live two states away, we enlisted the help of my brother-in-law.  He took photos of the original stockings and measured the length of each section.  I then crocheted a free form stocking trying to match the measurements.  My finished stockings ended up being slightly bigger, but they have the same basic pattern.  I added the kids’ names using the crochet alphabet found on Moogly Blog.  Eventually I will make some appliqués to add to each.

Two years later and I finally decided it was time to make a giant stocking for my daughter.  In the meantime, I also have another niece.  That put me behind two.  Plus my sister-in-law is due in April with another nephew, and my second child is due in May!  That means I need four more!

Luckily they work up pretty quickly considering the size of the finished project.  I’m hoping to have at least two completely finished by Christmas!  We’ll see!  It’s a lot harder to get crochet time with a crazy toddler running around!

Giant Christmas Stocking

Gauge: 13 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches

Yarn: Worsted Weight in Red and White or colors of choice. I recommend Red Heart Super Saver or Caron One Pounder

Hook: I used size K, but I crochet very tight stitches. Most people would probably need and I or J. Size ultimately doesn’t need to be exactly the same as mine.

Size: Finished stocking is approximately 3.5 feet from the top to the tip of the toe.

Note:  most of this pattern is done in DC with some decreasing for shape.  There are also rows of front post double crochet toward the top.
