Heart Square- Free Pattern!

**1/14/17 update- I have added a video tutorial for this pattern!

I wanted to get started early on a Valentine’s Day project.  I have also been wanting to work on graph crocheting.  I decided to combine them and do a pattern made by joining small squares with graphed hearts.  I am including both written directions and the graph.  I will also update the pattern to include a video tutorial after the New Year.  I’m going to be traveling, so I’m not sure if I will be able to get any videos done.

I wanted my squares to be reversible, so I did each square using bobbins.  You can carry the yarn under your stitches, but for some rows this would be for up to 13 stitches.  If you use colors with a lot of contrast, for example red and white, the carried yarn will show through a lot.

I will post an additional pattern for the final project I make using these squares. I just haven’t decided exactly how I want that to look yet!

Heart Square Video Tutorial
Here is the square chart:

Here is the square pattern:

Crochet Heart square

Materials:

Worsted Weight Yarn Color A: this will be for the back ground of your square.  I used Red Heart Super Saver in Pale Plum.

Worsted Weight Yarn Color B: this will be the color of the heart and the optional order.  I used Red Heart Super Saver in Petal Pink.

Crochet Hook: Size I.

Gauge: this really is not important unless you really desire a very specific size of square.  My gauge for these squares is: 13 stitches and 14 rows= 4 inches.

The square before the border will have 15 rows of 15 single crochets.

Finished Square size:

Without  Border: app 4.5 x 4.5

With border: app 5.25 x 5.25

Directions:

If you are using bobbins, you will need the following

Color A: two bobbins with approximately 8 yards of yarn each (referred to as A1 and A2) and one bobbin with approximately 1.5 yards of yarn (referred to as A3)

Color B: one bobbin of yarn with approximately 10 yards of color B (referredv to as B1) one bobbin with approximately 1.5 yards of yarn (referred to as B3)

I will put directions referring to those using bobbins in paranthesis throughout the pattern
